I couldn't agree with you more. For years they've been spending a fortune on superficial construction around campus while they've been increasing the tuition. They are giving people jobs in the process mind you, but it's really poor form for them to make the senior class gift a contribution to the annual budget. There's no telling where that money's going.
I definitely understand where you are coming from here, Jennah. We have spent a lot of money during our 4 years here. But I also understand where UD is coming from as well. Albert, there is a way to know where that money is going though. You actually get to choose where your money is going. For example, I am a Elementary Education major and I chose for my money to go straight to the Elementary Teacher Education Program here to directly help UD make the program even better than it already is. I feel as though UD has provided me with a lot for the money, compared to some other schools. I know I pay for my education, but I definitely think they have prepared me extremely well and I wouldn't mind giving back to that. The senior class gift asks you to give a "spirit gift" which is $20.11. Now I know to a college student 20 bucks may be a lot but I think if you get to choose where your money is going, it is definitely worth it. You could always have your money go two places if you want and they divide your donation in half. And you can donate to a sorority or frat you may be in or a club or a sports team. So there really is a way for you to have control over where your money is going.
I understand both sides of this argument, but for me personally, I have a lot of UD pride and I am grateful for everything I have received and learned here over the 4 years so I am okay with giving them an extra $20.11 if it will help UD a better place for the next generation. (And who knows, that may be our kids one day!)
I find it absurd that a University with the largest endowment of any public University in the country some how needs monetary contribution from its senior class. A senior class gift is meant to commemorate that class and be something the students of it can come back and look to as a sign that they as a group left their mark on this university, improving it in some positive way. There is no sign of this going anywhere in particular, which I always distrust, so I say screw 'em, keep your money.
